CLC Volunteer Attorney Program

In 2023, the Children’s Law Center has committed to serving 20% more children than we did in 2022. We need to do more and we need to do more now. In January, we launched our revamped Volunteer Attorney Program and are in the process of training a new class of volunteer attorneys in Forsyth County.

Once a Volunteer Attorney for the CLC completes the onboarding and training process, they work in a very similar role to our staff attorneys. The CLC is appointed to the case by a judge. Following our appointment, we prepare the case file and support our volunteer attorney that takes on the case. The volunteer attorney is the appointed GAL but is always assigned to a CLC staff attorney who can be a resource. The volunteer attorney conducts the independent investigation, prepares the report for the court, provides recommendations to the judge, and is available to testify at trial.

Since our founding, volunteers have been vital to our ability to serve children and reliable partners. We have had many committed attorneys work with us to give children their say in court. To fulfil our pledge to serve more children, the CLC is prioritizing recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer attorneys who are passionate about advocating for children in domestic violence protective order and high conflict custody cases. Since the relaunch of the program, we have already seen increased interest from attorneys choosing to advocate for children in court with us. We are currently in the orientation and training process with our first class for new CLC Volunteer Attorney’s!

By listening to children respectfully, understanding the adverse experiences in their lives, and advocating for their best interests, our staff and volunteers strive to nurture emotionally and physically healthy adults. In doing so we not only work for a safe home and hope of a bright future for the children we serve, but also strengthen the neighborhoods they live in and our community as a whole.
