Elon Law School Winter Resident - Lexie Alston

Lexie Alston is a Massachusetts native and studied Communications, Spanish, and Leadership at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Upon graduation, Lexie worked for the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of StepUp Wilmington.

Lexie is currently a 2L at Elon University School of Law, and when she is not studying, she is busy fulfilling her roles as Student Bar Association President, Academic Fellow, and Teaching Assistant.

Lexie's desire to go to law school stemmed from her passion for helping others and she hopes to practice family or business law upon her graduation in December 2024.

1.      Why did you want to work with CLC?

Being the good you wish to see in the World – is my life motto, my reason for attending law school, and why I wanted to work with CLC.

2.      What do you think about our custody advocacy work?

Unfortunately, divorce rates in America are higher than most people would like, and with divorces comes child custody disputes. Due to this, the CLC’s work is extremely important because, in complex custody disputes, we can be a neutral party and advocate for the best interests of the child/children.

3.      Why is this work important to you?

This work is important to me because I have seen the impacts of child custody disputes on my friends and family members and its effects even after the dispute is resolved.

4.      What are you looking forward to?

As a resident, I look forward to getting the unique experience of being a neutral party in complex child custody cases and being an advocate for the children.

5.      What you’ve done/seen/learned so far?

So far, I have had the opportunity to attend a home visit and a school visit and participate in collateral calls. These experiences have taught me the importance of asking the right questions and getting various perspectives in order to make sound decisions for the family.

MORE ON THE ELON LAW RESIDENCY PROGRAM

The CLC has been a partner of Elon University School of Law in their Residency Program since its early days. The program has been a tremendous resource for our organization, and we anticipate continuing the partnership for years to come. The Residency Program is designed as a part of a course connected program to provide law students the opportunity to gain understanding and experience of the role of a lawyer, under the supervision of an experienced attorney, who serves as professor, mentor, and example. Through this program, students in residency deepen their legal knowledge acquired in courses, understand the importance and value of ethical responsibilities, hone and acquire skills needed to be a successful lawyer, and make the professional connections important to career development. They also provide our organization with skilled and competent legal minds to support our mission and help us advocate for children.
