Children’s Law Center formally announces it will begin taking High Conflict Custody Cases in Guilford County

Iris Sunshine, Executive Director, announcing plans at the January meeting of the Greensboro Bar Association.

The Children’s Law Center has been serving Guilford County since 2014 in Domestic Violence Protective Order cases. The organization serves as a voice for children across the county, including in both the High Point Courthouse and the Greensboro Courthouse. We have served over 175 children in Guilford County since 2014.

Since 2005, we have advocated for the best interests of children in high conflict custody cases in Forsyth County. Fortunately, our Guilford County based team is now able to provide similar services to children across the county as well.

The Wake Forest University School of Law studied the efficacy of the Children’s Law Center’s work. The study examined past civil domestic violence cases and found that the appointment of a Children’s Law Center Guardian Ad Litem significantly reduced subsequent instances of family violence within the home. Additionally, the earlier the CLC is appointed to a civil domestic violence case the better the outcome is for the child(ren) involved.

We hope and expect that expanding our services will not only have a positive impact on the children we serve but also on the communities in which they live. Our immediate goal for all our young clients is safe placement in a secure and loving home. The long term goal of the Children’s Law Center is to enable children to become emotionally healthy adults. With an advocate and other caring adults by their side, these children have the opportunity to grow up to live happy, hope filled lives, and break the cycle of violence and abuse.
